Fox and Finch Whitley Bay

Whitley Bay has had its ups and downs over the years but appears to be undergoing somewhat of a renaissance. Since the reopening of the Spanish City last Summer a number of independent eateries and bars have opened their doors. The latest addition to the local culinary landscape is Fox and Finch on Park View. Serving classic Tapas with a modern twist this relaxed, stripped back and quirky restaurant/bar has proved a hit with residents in the two short weeks since opening.

Tapas traditionally is enjoyed in a relaxed laid back atmosphere with a few good wines and beers where conversation can flow as you pick and choose your favourites from the selection of plates brought to your table. In terms of what is on offer to drink at The Fox and Finch the bar is incredibly well stocked with a choice of ales and lagers as well as an impressive selection of gins, vodkas and whiskies or a cocktail if your’e feeling fruity!

I have now eaten in the restaurant a couple of times and have not been disappointed in the slightest. You would expect as with any restaurant in its infancy for their to be teething problems but there were certainly non apparent from the minute we entered the building until the bill was settled. The menu on offer is varied without being overly extensive which is always reassuring in terms of freshness. There are a choice of twenty six tapas dishes priced between £3.95-£9.95 to satisfy most palates including vegetarian options as well as salads, sides and a Little Fox Cub menu for the kids. We opted for 6 dishes between 2 of us which was more than enough.

My favourite was the confit belly pork with a creamy blue cheese sauce. I love belly pork at the best of times and this offering was meltingly tender and perfectly accompanied by the rich sauce. Similarly impressive were the King Prawns in a Spicy Tomato Sauce, Halloumi Orange and Mint Salad, Patatas Bravas and the ubiquitous Chicken, Chorizo and Seafood Paella. One dish I did covetously stare at was our neighbouring tables Chorizo Scotch Egg.. I mean who doesn’t love a good Scotchy! You can opt for a deal of 4 tapas with 2 glasses of wine or beer which I would suggest is enough for most people for a very reasonable £21.95 all day from Monday to Friday.

So will be dining in The Fox and Finch again? Absolutely yes! There are dessert options on the menu should you not be sat at your table like a well stuffed piñata! I would urge not just locals but those from further afield to give this place a try even if it is just to pop in for a pint or a coffee. I am sure you won’t be disappointed. I would say one thing it does get busy there so if you haven’t booked be prepared to wait your turn for a table but as I mentioned there are plenty of drinks behind the bar to entertain yourselves with.
